"Hello sirs!"
At this point in the adaptation, there are certain changes made to keep character cohesion throughout the whole of TAZ, and I enjoy it very much.
I love the designs of the new NPCs with standout favorites being
- Graham the juicy wizard (we love a beard and a passion for trains)
- Garfield the Deals Warlock (Is he the lasagna cat? Who's to say)
- Angus MacDonald (a very good lad)
- and Jenkins (if you've listened to the podcast, the design fits the voice perfectly).
Now, I can't say why the ending in the book is more potent than it was in the original arc because of spoilers, but the changes have given character motivations more weight. It leaves me excited when these hinted story elements will pop off, and they WILL pop off.
If you can't wait for the rest of the books, you can give the podcast a listen and laugh and cry and experience this roller coaster ride of a story."Hello sirs!"

"What's up, you cool baby?"
It's difficult to pick a starting point when talking about the McElroys.
You could start with their debut podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me; an advice show that gives funny but not always helpful advice. You could talk about Monster Factory, the character creation Youtube series where there are no middle sliders and how their creation "The Final Pam" was referenced in a Fallout '76 Easter Egg.
You could talk about how they're Actual Friends with Lin Manuel-Miranda, how they did a whole podcast episode on the red carpet opening of "Escape to Margaritaville" and got roasted by Al Roker, OR their 6 episode television series available to watch on VRV.
You could even bring up how they got bit parts in Trolls: World Tour by the sheer force of will.
But let's talk about The Adventure Zone, a podcast that started out as a one-off episode to use when the oldest brother was fit to go on paternity leave. In this, the three brothers and their dad play the starter DnD set "[The ]Lost Mines of Phandelever". There was a huge positive response, and the family kept going. It evolved into a story I can describe as lightning in a bottle. It's gripping, it's emotional, and it's R E A L L Y funny.
Now it's being adapted to a graphic novel series. This volume adapts the first arc, which sticks close to the starter pack campaign to the point where certain names and locations needed to be revised. But the turning point is when they meet characters like Killian and Magic Brian--at this point, it's no longer Wizards of the Coast, it's pure McElroy. And it keeps going to a point where you're left intrigued to what's going on. The last panel gets me every time.
If you like tabletop stories, silly jokes, bugbear hugs, and guys in blue jeans, check this book out when you have the chance."What's up, you cool baby?"

"The Saga of Rex" has been on my mind for over 10 years, from when it was published through Kazu Kibuishi's Flight anthology series to when the entire story was collected into one volume. The majority of the story is told without words, which may be the problem with something of this scope.
There's a small introduction to what's happening--biomorphs are collecting specimens under the guise of potential mates and the vulpine protagonist Rex explores the inner workings of this planet. Other things that happen in the story are alluded to, but with stories that have no words, a simple narrative is best. Rex left me in the dust while entertaining itself in its own world.
Something I admire with Michel Gagné's art is how consistent everything looks. He did create an animation pilot of this story, and you can tell this was a passion project of his. But in this form, it's a case of consistently good visuals with a weak story. I like my stories to have a little more meat to them, y'see?
That's not to say you shouldn't read it. This was something Gagné created over a decade ago when his craft was still in progress. If you like cute animals going on adventures in an interstellar setting, consider this book. But, don't expect to be blown away."The Saga of Rex" has been on my mind for over 10 years, from when it was published through Kazu Kibuishi's Flight anthology series to when the entire story was collected into one volume. Maybe five years ago this comic would have been for me, but not this day and age.
Props for writing college students accurately, with the mishmash of adolescent freedom and adult responsibility, but that might be the one thing I can commend this comic for doing.
Art was real wonky, especially with the arm proportions. I'm not a fan of that full-cheek look with the mouths--it looks like they're talking while chewing. But art is subjective, and other readers may find this art style charming.

There's a thing in YA books that bothers me when it comes to how boy-girl childhood friendships can be written, and that is the notion that they'll begin dating when they're older. It smacks of this underlying message that boys and girls, or men and women, cannot be content with a friendship.
And if you asked me to list one good thing from this story, it's that it doesn't do that.
Yes, the ongoing conflict is that Austin avoids contacting Bina for long periods of time while attending soccer camp, but that's more from peer pressure and possible bullying from the other boys (keeping in consistent contact with a girl = being "whipped"). And that situation sincerely sucks.
I do like that Bina and Austin have a good talk by summer's end of what was going on, and the reveal that he got a girlfriend while at camp is adorable.
The message is a good one to consider--friendships can remain ingrained in us even if we drift apart at times. Some of the best friendships I have don't require constant contact with one another, but when we do get together it is an amazing time.
Aside from that, the rest of the book reads as a summer of adolescence would. Pretty par for the course for the genre and overall an okay book. There's a thing in YA books that bothers me when it comes to how boy-girl childhood friendships can be written, and that is the notion that they'll begin dating when they're older. The illustrations are so lovely, from the way the characters are drawn to those gorgeous dresses! The story was an emotional roller-coaster, where I was giggling one moment and gasping the next. The end had me kicking my legs like an excited teen, and I'm so glad I bought this book.
Highly recommended if you like fairytales and sweet friendships.I

This is a political book.
It's also an important book that discusses democratic voting on a level that children can understand.
It is also-also a book about bunnies falling in love, and that's enough to give me the warm and fuzzies while I was reading.

Jacob Tremblay's performance was solid. I liked the multicultural casting, too. And the little vignettes with Auggie in an astronaut suit or interacting with Star Wars characters was charming.
However--
The format of telling this story through different perspectives fell through around the half-way point of the movie. After we go through Miranda's side-story, there's a shift to a more omnipresent narration, but there's no indication for us to understand that when the format used to imply it thus far in the film is gone.
And Julian...he made some very bad decisions. Simply saying "I'm sorry" to Mr. Tushman doesn't give him a pass. I read The Julian Chapter, and I still think this kid's got a long way to go with learning empathy.Jacob Tremblay's performance was solid. I liked the multicultural casting, too. Coco received a small bit of controversy before its theatrical release. A boy who wants to be a musician despite his family's disapproval? And he has a journey in the Land of the Dead? It was quick to accuse Coco of being too similar to The Book of Life, another movie about the Day of the Dead and one I've sung high praises about in the past.
But you can't be too quick to judge these things, and it's foolish to claim that there can only be one definitive movie that celebrates a holiday. Just look at the ridiculous amount of Christmas films that have been made and cherished.
But is Coco the same as The Book of Life? To keep it short--no. It shares similar themes about connecting with loved ones and remembering those who have passed on, but aside from the two similarities mentioned above, Coco is its own movie. It's less comical, less mythological, has an entirely original score (no jukebox numbers), and it touches on bits of Mexican culture that weren't present in The Book of Life--like ofrendas and alebrijes. It also succeeded in making me tear up, the second Oscar winner this year to do so.
Either I'm growing softer, or these movies are getting better at pushing my emotional buttons.
Would I recommend one movie over the other? Absolutely not! Go watch them both. They're excellent.Coco received a small bit of controversy before its theatrical release. There's a point in this movie where this becomes The Most Awkward Teenage Crush Story, and had it continued down that path, I don't think I could take it seriously.
But it's overall a sweet, fluffy movie.

I wasn't prepared for what this movie had in store.
I was kind of expecting something along the lines of Song of the Sea, another feature Cartoon Saloon animated, but oh.
Oh, what a fool I was.
What I got was some too-real portrayal of what it would have been like to live in Afghanistan during the Taliban's reign. There are scenes in this film that hit H A R D, but I think it's necessary to punctuate just how big of a decision it was for Parvana to disguise herself as a boy to help her family.
The story with the Elephant King was a good contrast, portrayed with what looked like little puppets on a cut-out backdrop.
I would definitely recommend this but only if you can manage some brutal scenes.I wasn't prepared for what this movie had in store.
