This book was overlong considering the mystery was pretty easy to figure out. This is more than a murder mystery though; it's an homage to mothers and children and a love story to Australia. Above all, home is not only where the heart is, it's where we find the ones we love. This book was overlong considering the mystery was pretty easy to figure out. A very good entry in the series. I especially liked that this installment and the one before it took on the pandemic. It's part of the story as it was (and is) a part of all of our lives. So many novels that take place in the last few years just ignore it. The mystery is satisfying with lots of funny and weird characters. Seems like Ruth and Nelson may take their relationship to the next level. Something I would never have imagined a few books ago.A very good entry in the series. What happens when you have to give up on your dreams? Jess's dream was to have a child. Malcolm's dream was to own a bar with a leafy rooftop patio. Each person can see clearly that the other's dream has failed yet they can't see it for themselves and can't communicate it to the other. I was a bit frustrated with this book as there was a big section where nothing "happened" but it finally got going. What happens when you have to give up on your dreams? You have new dreams that are meaningful as long as you're dreaming them with the one who matters most. What happens when you have to give up on your dreams? Jess's dream was to have a child. A horror book of a different kind by the master. Nothing supernatural but horror just the same as Billy, a sniper who learned his skills as a marine in Iraq, is now a contract killer and plans one last job before planning to retire. Billy, who has spent most of his life not getting close to people finds himself enjoying the company of others while he waits for his subject to come to town. He rescues a woman after she is attacked and finds a partner. In Billy's career he has been careful to kill "bad" people, the paradox being that he himself, as a killer, is a bad man. The story can have only one outcome but getting there is an enjoyable ride.A horror book of a different kind by the master. This novel has an interesting story about a female chemist who has experienced a lot of discrimination for trying to be a woman in a male dominated field. She tries to live her life according to her values but her values are unfortunately not well accepted for women in that era. My caveats for liking the book are not the "unbelievability" pointed out by other readers but rather the flippancy with which certain incidences are reported. I did not feel much emotion from any character. Plenty of potentially emotionally charged events occur but they are merely reported rather than described in any way to evoke emotion. So the book is fun light reading but don't expect any deep connection to any character. This novel has an interesting story about a female chemist who has experienced a lot of discrimination for trying to be a woman in a male dominated field. I read nearly 500 pages of this book before abandoning it. I read Pillars years ago and loved it and just read Evening and the morning and liked it also. Sadly I just didn't care about these characters nor the plotting and intrigue which reminded me of Wolf hall which I also did not like. Add in the horrible bloody intolerant attitudes and actions regarding religion and I just could not hack it. Read the end and returned it.I read nearly 500 pages of this book before abandoning it. I've heard of so many people who loved Bel Canto and thought this book was boring. I didn't care especially for Bel Canto but loved the Dutch House. It is a great story of how a place can have profound meaning for people, even when the meaning is very different. There's no big mystery, twist or action. Just a story of people, especially the bond between siblings.I've heard of so many people who loved Bel Canto and thought this book was boring. There have been plenty of rave reviews about this book but I found it a bit slow and sometimes had trouble keeping track of characters. It is meticulously researched and plenty of what happened with the Osage will leave you amazed and furious. Quick read about a boys reform school in the 1960s. There are graphic passages of the cruel and inhumane treatment of african american boys. At least loosely based on a real place that I recently listened to a podcast about. It won a second Pulitzer for Colson Whitehead.Quick read about a boys reform school in the 1960s. Another good one for Bolton fans but I found it a bit lacking. There were no real twists here. I figured out every single plot element early on and I really, really hate it when I know more than the characters in the book. I love being fooled rather than yelling (at least internally) at the characters to see the obvious. Good action sequence at the end of the book in a unique setting.Another good one for Bolton fans but I found it a bit lacking. There were no real twists here. I wouldn't usually even pickup up a "relationship" book but I'd heard some buzz. So glad I read it. Marianne and Connell are two brilliant young people trying to figure out how they fit in the world. As they move through high school and college the only constant in their lives is each other--neither one a "normal" person. By the end of the book I think they've grown and seemed to be near the conclusion most of us eventually reach: normality is a myth. Everyone and no one is normal. Brilliant writing with some very memorable passages.I wouldn't usually even pickup up a "relationship" book but I'd heard some buzz. So glad I read it.
