Julius Caesar returns in triumph to Rome after having defeated Pompey. Though he is the idol of the people, a group of men form a conspiracy against him. Although Brutus, a man of great integrity, loves Caesar, he is persuaded to join the conspiracy by the crafty and ambitious Cassius, who argues that Caesar's power is a threat to Rome's freedom. Ignoring the entreaties of his wife Calphurnia, who has dreamed of his death, Caesar goes to the Senate on the Ides of March and is assassinated. With a blazing speech at Caesar's funeral, Marc Antony takes up the sword against the conspirators.
