If you are a fan of Martin Clunes and want to see more of him while waiting for the next Doc Martin season to start, check out William & Mary. Made between 2003-2005, Clunes plays a widowed undertaker with two teenage daughters who, through a dating service, meets Mary, a single midwife with two teenage sons. Their occupations complete a circle. She sees people into the world and he sees them out. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start but, in time, they merge their two households to create a large, loving family. You’ll find great acting and true to life story lines that are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always well done.

Loved this series. I agree that the character of Mary is written as less than sympathetic at times (I don't think it's the acting but the script), and this occasionally derailed my buying into the Big Love Story, but ... I feel this series was very good and not just for fans of Martin Clunes. There is a lot of strong performing from the younger actors. Just from time to time the writing feels "too written" and forced, taking away for the building of characters as time goes on.

Decent enough. William is a little to much of a pushover and Mary is just plain not very nice, especially towards the end of the series.

I really enjoyed this series. The British have a way of demonstrating the complexities of life, yet maintaining the heart. I like both main characters.

This was an excellent, well-acted series. However, I never did learn to like the character of Mary.

At first I thought it would burn itself out quickly, but it only got better as it went along. Like a long romantic comedy movie, except not stupid, the acting, dialogue, humor and plot lines are of consistent high quality throughout the series. Each episode focuses on a death and a birth, with William & Marie's courtship and family life swirling around chaotically. A lot of surprises and no easy answers, like in life.

What is a gem to one may not be to another... IMO not the best of Brit series. Somewhat clever, comic at times, certainly real in portrayal of living arrangements. I found the second episode on disc one very good in dealing with expected death - well , it is inevitable, yes? Martin Clunes is not high on my list, just tolerable. I did not complete the series.

Another fabulous gem from the Brits! This is an endearing series about the loving relationship between a midwife and an undertaker, and the complications that arise from family and their offbeat but vital jobs. The principal actors, Martin Clunes and Julie Graham, are simply wonderful, and work superbly together. It also is a treat to see Cheryl Campbell again in a meaty role, some years after her fine performance in the original "Pennies From Heaven". British TV features a number of absorbing detective series, but they also air extremely human series like this one. William and Mary is a total joy.
