Roly Carradine has found refuge in Cornwall, in the mellow stone house of his childhood where, in the stream running past the garden, the heron makes its nest. A broken marriage and a terrible burden of guilt made Roly remove himself from his busy London life. Here in Cornwall, Roly welcomes others into his life, all are seeking resolution in the beauty and peace of the countryside: Kate, whose husband just died; Daisy, a dancer recovering from back injury; and Nat, his son who receives frequent visits from his mother Monica, Roly's ex-wife.
