Charles Laughton is a masterfully benighted Captain Bligh while Franchot Tone plays the part of the as-yet unseasoned ensign with real aplomb. Yes, this film is quite a classic undertaking.

If you like actor, Clark Gable, then, you are sure to like "Mutiny on the Bounty". He is the real star of this picture not Charles Laughton who plays the meanie, Captain Bligh.

Set in the year 1787 - "Mutiny" is a high seas adventure story that starts its tale in England, then sets sail off to the tropical island paradise of Tahiti.

Now 83 years old - "Mutiny" was a huge MGM production back then that cost $2 million to complete. (That was big bucks in those days)

Even though it was actor, Charles Laughton who had received top billing for starring in this 1935 adventure-drama story - This was clearly Clark Gable's picture from start to finish. Indeed, it was.

And, if you are seriously looking for historical accuracy to entertain you with "Mutiny" - Then - Forget it!... This is Hollywood, folks, and, as expected, they are telling things their way, which means that "creative embellishment" rules the high seas here.

Anyway - I'd say that "Mutiny" had both its good moments, as well as its not-so-good moments. But, all-in-all - I think that this Academy Award winner was certainly well-worth a view.

My biggest complaint has to do with the casting of Charles Laughton as the notorious Captain Bligh character. Simply said - The repulsively pompous Laughton was downright unconvincing in his part.

I liked this DVD. I recommend this movie to adults only. It has violence. It demonstrates how abusive humans can be to each other. It has a moral story to treat everyone with respect and compassion. I like the 1930 version with Clark Gable instead of the 1960 version with Marlon Brando. 1930 version explained better what abuse took place. It presents it better emotionally. CG was more emotional in his presentation. MB was distant and uncommunicative verbally and non-verbally. 1960 version speculated (guessed) before and after the event a little more thank the 1930 version. But, I recommend both movies.

Although there are two versions of Mutiny on the Bounty, for my money Charles Laughton and Clark Gable get the nod. The true story of the 1789 voyage of the HMS Bounty under the cruel Captain William Bligh. Laughton is perfect in the role as the stern captain and Clark Gable ably plays first mate Fletcher Christian.
P.PAlthough in black and white, it has the terrific cast to carry the movie. You should really enjoy this one! PS The features icon on the DVD gives 2 great pieces of film. One is a short documentary on Fletcher Christian after he took over the Bounty and took his small crew to a nearby island. It also has a two minute feature that is from the 1939 Academy Awards. I won't spoil it for you with more information, but believe me, this is a great package!

The only film in Oscar history that had three nominees for Best Actor: Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, and Franchot Tone (none won). Because of this, the the Best Supporting Actor category was introduced so this situation would not happen again. Personally, I would've picked Laughton. He was the epitome of the sadistic flog-happy Captain Bligh. Great classic. Huge production value. FIVE STARS.
