Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.

In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.

A great beginner's guide to the vast world of knitting and crocheting! Stoller does an amazing job at bringing her readers step by step through even the most difficult to describe tasks in knitting. The book is also full of cute and witty little stories, tips and beautiful patterns worth creating yourself. She had me knitting and designing my own things beyond this book in about 3 weeks.

A good guide for beginners, although they should move slowly from beginnng to the end of the book. Don't just jump into advanced knitting patterns; it does take practice. To understand better what you can handle, I recommend the Chicks with Sticks beginner books. This book, though, is full of sass with cheeky double entendres interspersed. It gives you lots of reasons to want to be a knitter! My second favourite knitting guide overall so far.

The best beginners book. Wow! you can make things that look good, and that people will actually wear, right away. Be sure to use high quality wool. The designs are basic, and will look cheap and craftsy in acrylic.

What fun!

The subtitle of this is ?The Knitter?s Handbook?. And boy, is it ever! Not only a flirtatious look at knitting for beginners and experts, it portrays teeth grinding fun of knitting as you are ripping out some piece with vigor. Perhaps you are afraid to ask that very personal question about telling a knit from a purl, or you want to add a pom-pom as your finishing touch. No problemo! All kinds of questions are answered here with no embarrassing self-conscious pauses. Projects are shown in full color in the center of the book ranging from large to small, easy to hard. So if you are in the mood for some eyebrow raising, funky knit ideas and helpful hints, then this is for you!
