Filled with criticisms about higher education in the USA, American popular culture, the trends and character of academe, and interfused with a humane vision - which doesn't shirk strenuousness and risk - for a ethos for democracy, this long essay, composed mostly of two to six page mini-essays, is heartening and encouraging. Its also packed with questions! Although it makes numerous references, it completely lacks notes and bibliography.
Edmundson's "Why Write?" is a welcome change to the mainstream way of thinking about the process of writing. I cannot wait to read his "Why Read?" It, for sure, will be as innovative as the book I already read.
