The Midnight House is a change of pace for this series which has featured planned mega-terrorist attacks in the form plagues and nuclear weapons. Instead the reader sees John Wells trying to solve the murders of a unit which interrogated suspected terrorists in a location called the Midnight House. The novel switches from Wells’ investigations to flashbacks in the Midnight House. Berenson conflicts the reader by placing a vile terrorist along with a victimized boy in the unit’s care. On the one hand the reader wants to see the terrorist talk and on the other we see somebody who needs help. In doing so the author brilliantly allows the reader to see both sides of the “enhanced interrogation” debate that was going on at the time the novel was published. It’s clear that the process is soul destroying for the interrogators as well as brutalizing the prisoners. As always Berenson’s novels are more thoughtful and nuanced than those of the late Vince Flynn or Brad Thor. If John LeCarre doesn’t like this series, he should.

Well-written but grim. At its core is the torture of "enemy combatants" by US forces to gain information, so I found it difficult to listen to.

This could have been more interesting and exciting had the author and editor not chosen to be repetiitive throughout. As a result, the story bogs down in the middle. 5 of 10 stars
