Max the Wolf was a wolf in exactly the same way that foothills are made up of real feet and a tiger shark is part tiger, which is to say, not at all.

If he's a hero, then I'm the long-lost son of an improbable union between a flounder and a mountain goat -- Banderbrock about McTavish

Such a wonderful mash-up of fantasy and kid detective stories. The book stands well on its own, but anyone who has read and loved Fables will recognize Willingham's signature style of exploring storied archetypes with skepticism and a little sarcasm. They will also recognize a nod to a badger named Brock.

One of the best children's chapter books I've read in a long time. I loved this story from the first sentence and was captivated so much I didn't even think to predict what would happen at the end, so was pleasantly surprised instead of saying "yeah, that's what I figured it would be". Loved the characters, especially McTavish, the "thing that was possibly a cat".
