Just before summer begins, Ali finds an odd photograph in the attic. She knows the two children in it are her mother, Claire, and her aunt Dulcie. But who's the third person, the one who's been torn out of the picture? Supernatural and chilling. Ages 10+

Add a CommentTeachers--What an incredible, suspenseful book that is perfect for an October read-aloud! Mary Downing Hahn is a master at creating tension in the plot while making the characters very real. When I read this book aloud to my fourth graders, I would use the more suspenseful parts in the book to stop the reading for the day, much to the groans of the students!
This was incredibly predictable, I picked it up because I recognised the cover art from grade school. I don't think it actually deserved the grade school hype. But it's a bit better for younger kids. Though it's weird just how abusive and bipolar the parents are. There's subtext in the parents dialogue and actions which are... disturbing. Not terrible, but not written with a lot of effort or skill.
I just started today and i'm almost done!!!
It's great for be-tweeners - just enough ghostly curiosity and suspense to keep them reading!
On its own, this book is a solid middle-grade ghostly mystery. If you've read other MDH books, however, it suffers from being too similar to "Wait Til Helen Comes" (which is my favorite of Hahn's books), with painter mothers and a body of water (lake/pond, respectively) playing a prominent role in the plot.
This was soooo good if you like mystery! This is more like for ages 10 and up.
This book was very good. I liked the plot. The characters were very interesting, too. I recommend this book to everyone who loves ghost stories, or people who are just looking for a good book. I liked how the author got to the point right away and how she created a creepy mood.
This is the best book by this author i have read so far! I recommend it to everyone who loves a great book! lots of action and adventure; i couldnt put it down!
It is a wonderfully writen book that captivated me in its adventurous and amazing story. Everything felt so real and genuine: the setting, characters and the whole plot.
This book is AMAZING! I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes an interesting ghost story with a mystery. It is very interesting and it only took me 2 days to read. Even if you don't like ghost story's the minute you pick it up you wont be able to put it down.
