I really wanted to like this movie; the trailers had me hooked, even though I know that the "90% of your brain" cliché is completely false and annoying. (It's like how we very thoroughly know by now that radiation doesn't give you superpowers, but I still like the Incredible Hulk; the origin story for his powers is nonsense, but I can just ignore that and enjoy him, the same way I can enjoy the X-Men, where superpowers just randomly exist and don't require an origin story.) Sadly, however, "Lucy" is an absolutely terrible film, with only a couple of interesting moments. I believe it was this movie which cemented my current opinion of Scarlett Johannsen, since thoroughly reinforced by her role in the various Marvel movies, that she is an audience-avatar performer who doesn't even try to actually act, basically the female equivalent of Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix" - not truly a character, but just a vehicle for the viewer to imagine themselves as, with no personality traits that might conflict with the viewer's own and thereby ruin this immersion (as an aside, this is largely irrelevant of the viewer's actual gender; I'm as manly a man as you'll find outside the Navy Seals, but I have no problem enjoying a movie with ScarJo as its lead, assuming that movie is actualy good, unlike this one). With a well-established character like Black Widow, such an approach works perfectly well; here, it fails utterly, because the movie around her doesn't give her anything worth doing.

not anywhere close to real science or even sc-fi. this is fantasy. visually appealing, action, with two cool actors. it's worth watching one time if you don't take it seriously.

Not everything in the movie is realistic, but it's entertaining and exciting, and best of all, the movie makes you THINK!

Excellent movie/story that should make you question everything being 'taught' in our current stone age yet to be civllization. Question more and breathe deeply. Just contemplate all of it.

The underworld of drug transportation through people. This movie bloody and violent that seems quite believable.

More Hollywood, via Paris (Bresson). Thoroughly mediocre but has required number of JPM's (industry term: Jolts per Minute).
Like the Matrix series- killer premise, pedestrian bang-bang-kiss-kiss execution. (Matrix was particularly illustrative of that: the matrix being a fabulous metaphor for culture, ones opinions, worldview.)
Scarlett Johanssen seems to be the new Summer Glau. She's getting the killer babe scifi parts. And Kate Beckinstall gets the vampire bombshell parts (Ironic 'progress' isn't it- women are ever so gradually being included as more than arm candy etc., but only as honorary men, violent superheros with boobs!).
Why do i mention it at all if i yawn at it? Because, however Mickey Mouse its Big ideas*, it may incur thought. Its Big Ideas are just window dressing, but nothing says you have to obsess on the Punch and Judy show going on through the window.
So it may stimulate thought, which is far more than non-SF movies do.
It ain't The Arrival tho.
*a real howler of a quote: Lucy reassures a scientist that, "Ignorance brings chaos, not knowledge." Oh really- funny then that with Big Science/Technology being the dominant force in humanity, and us accelerating towards total chaos/extinction, how more knowledge, more science will, somehow. save us. Dying of alcoholism? The cure is to drink more. Brought to you by Brewers of America, research wing.

A disappointing movie, to say the least. The first 15 minutes or so give the impression of a story-based film, but it soon deteriorates into just another over-the-top special effects/CGI shoot-em-up: superhero-type fights, high-wreckage car chases, loads of inept bad-guys, shoot-outs, and even a rocket-launcher in a hospital... People die by the dozen in Lucy's wake; death and destruction rain down upon Paris as the drug-lords try to reclaim their goods. Ok, Lucy is exposed to a synthetic drug that lets her use more of her brain-power. But this, inexplicably, turns her into an indestructible, mind-reading, physics-altering, super-human. She can shape-shift, she can control any device from anywhere, she can turn off gravity, she can control people's minds, she assimilates the internet. Could it get any more ridiculous, or any less plausible? Luc! Luc! What happened to story-telling? One star for Scarlett Johansson, who does a pretty good job making her character at least watchable.

Rated 5/10. What started as an extremely cheesy movie, and seemed to be destined for a '1', actually turned itself around and was surprisingly okay.

About a third of the way through, the show became somewhat thought provoking.

It could have been a lot better if it wasn't a shoot-em-up. That detracted from the part about man's brain capacity.

Also, someone else should have been casted in Johansson's role. Her range of acting skills is quite limited, in my opinion.

Intriguing.

Not ashamed to watch it again today and enjoy Lucy's lecture on time:
...There are, in fact, no numbers and no letters. We've codified our existence to bring it down to human size to make it comprehensible. We've created a scale so that we can forget its unfathomable scale. But if humans are not the unit of measure and the world isn't governed by mathematical laws, what governs all that? Film a car speeding down a road. Speed up the image infinitely and the car disappears. So what proof do we have of its existence? Time gives legitimacy to its existence. Time is the only true unit of measure. It gives proof to the existence of matter. Without time, we don't exist.

From IMDb:

Professor Norman: For primitive beings like us, life seems to have only one single purpose: gaining time. And it is going through time that seems to be also the only real purpose of each of the cells in our bodies. To achieve that aim, the mass of the cells that make up earthworms and human beings has only two solutions. Be immortal, or to reproduce. If its habitat is not sufficiently favorable or nurturing, the cell will choose immortality. In other words, self-sufficiency and self-management. On the other hand, if the habitat is favorable, they will choose to reproduce. That way, when they die, they hand down essential information and knowledge to the next cell. Which hands it down to the next cell and so on. Thus knowledge and learning are handed down through time.
