I watched this for the first time when I was in 3rd grade and I loved it because of the costume, the color and the music at the end. I loved it so much that I suggested it as the PG-rated movie for my class to watch.. forgetting the breast feeding scene as well as the faint but noticeable nudity in young children. I watched it again a few months ago after not watching it for years and I positively cried. The ending is super sad for those who are fairly emotional, but the movie itself is a work of art. I love it, and anyone who appreciates a good story and a bittersweet romance will love it too.

Man this movie was so beautiful, and the animation was very good. Its just the ending that was crazyyyy, she literally got kidnapped in the ending and got her memories erased

Slow-paced, beautifully animated, and dream-like in style and presentation. Isao Takahata's last film is also one of his best.

This is beautiful animation. In the extra DVD, I learned that the process of making the film started with the actors reading the script. No images were done before this. It is an unusual way of working, and they established a separate location for this film to be made as the whole process was not done in the usual way.

Isao Takahata's methods are different, and this makes his films different too, maybe not as mainstream as other Studio Ghibli films. They mention that My Neighbor, The Yamadas was a flop. Unfortunately success is measured at the box office.

Tale of Princess Kaguya is one of my favourite Studio Ghibli movies with a lovely retelling of a folk-tale, gentle illustrations and a serene musical soundtrack.

One day a poor bamboo cutter finds a tiny princess in the middle of a shining stalk of cut bamboo.

A Studio Ghibli movie that isn't directed by Hayao Miyazaki and doesn't look like one of his movies, but still has that slow, slice of life pacing along with myth, magic, and wonder. The art is like an old painting come to life and it's gorgeous. The story is a mix of delight, slow-building sadness, and utter heartbreak. But all in all, a sweet, mysterious, moving experience.

Directed by the late Isao Takahata, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is considered a hidden gem among the countless number of successful films produced by Studio Ghibli. Based off of a traditional Japanese folktale, the film follows a forest spirit sent to live with the impurities of Earth and how her attempt to adapt leads to nothing but misery. That is, until she realizes the existence of true love and how it brightens every aspect of her dreary life. The film utilizes a watercolour art style which enhances the viewer’s experience by not relying on modern special effects but rather a traditional setting, much in line with the theme of the plot. The Tale of Princess Kaguya has been featured in copious amounts of film festivals including but not limited to Cannes, Toronto, and San Sebastián and is a must-see especially if you are a fan of Studio Ghibli. Rest in peace Isao Takahata, your brilliance will be forever treasured.

A Japanese classic, told by a modern staple of Japanese animation. It's well directed and animated.

Sexual Content: A prince who comes to seek Kaguya for her beauty is kind of a creeper. A married man lies and seeks Kaguya's love, but is found out when his wife confronts him. Another married man asks to run away with her, forsaking his wife and child.

Other: In the official PG rating, it mentions the movie contains "partial nudity". This includes when women breastfeed and baby/toddler-age boys and girls run around without clothes that cover all of their private areas. It's not in detail, but it's clear to see.
