I approached this CD with a little trepidation: a recording that alternates between two musical ideas runs the risk of sounding like a pop record where the artist couldn't decide between dance numbers and ballads. Here, guitar/electronic interludes bridge gaps between classical piano pieces. Huh? Well, it actually works! The alternation is genius. The piano compositions range from Romantic show-off virtuosity (Liszt) to delicate neo-impressionism (Takemitsu), and the guitar interludes connect them by anticipating the rhythmic language of the next piece while preserving the harmonies from the previous (or vice-versa). Sometimes the guitar also goes into yet another style, repetitive minimalism (a la Dominic Frasca) but never loses its function as a link between pieces (and styles). As the title suggests, every piece has a watery, flowing sound. I would have liked to hear one piece near the end, perhaps newly-composed or even improvised, featuring Helene (piano) and Nitin (guitar and electronics) playing together, but that is a mere quibble. I anticipate future collaborations between these two musicians.
