Teenaged Rufus has a good sense of his family: he is the watcher; his twin sister is the sensible one; his younger sister is the funny one; and his younger brother is the quiet one. Rufus?s parents are basically good people (in spite of his Dad having named him Rufus in honour of Rufus Wainwright, who he met at a party). Dad spends a lot of time travelling with his work, but family life tends to roll along smoothly. The comfortable?if imperfect?dynamic is upset one spring day when a young woman appears at their home. She is her father's daughter from a youthful romance. How will his "new" sister Amelia fit into Rufus' and his family's sense of itself? How will the family move past the years of half-truths and outright omissions? In spite of the heavy subject matter, 15-year-old Rufus tells his story with self-deprecating humour and with an eye for irony. In the end, after everyone has accepted the fact that Amelia found what she came for-to satisfy her curiosity about her father and her half-siblings-there is also the hope that this is just the beginning of Amelia?s relationship with the family.
