Co-written and directed by Alexander Payne in 2017, this American SF dramedy delves into the life of a couple who decide to undertake a newly invented procedure to shrink their bodies so they can start a new life in an experimental community.
Although special visual effects appear superb, the whole thing turns out a mere fantasy or a childish dream if not a cultic nightmare.

I’m concerned when it’s written, directed and produced by the same people….mostly Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor and….
Maybe trying to get a convoluted message across… but… I’m trying, really hard, to believe that the white man is once again saving humanity and the less fortunate.

This movie was very odd and kinda slow at times.

The premise of this movie is so ludicrous, it's laughable and not in any good way. Matt Damon is really starting to look ragged around the edges too. Really dumb movie. For some great movies by same Director watch Election and About Schmidt. These are masterpieces compared to this lame duck of a movie.

I enjoyed this the first time and loved it the second time - there's quite a bit to unpack. Sure, some of it is pure fun and fantasy (i.e. all the details of being/living "downsized"), but the other story arcs (the movie takes an unexpected and seemingly unrelated turn part way through) and the path of a kind and compassionate man through them, are solid and heartwarming.

This movie was supposed to be funny, touching and insiteful; it barely was able to attain those in the greater context and became gimmicky and a diabolical snooze fest, waste of time, and waste of REAL precious natural resource in the process. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.

Really novel concept. The advertising is a bit misleading though. The plot goes off on a tangent halfway through, but the acting is well done. Rather than calling this a comedy, it really is more of drama, with a slight near-future Scifi plot.

I love Matt Damon and without him as the main (and honestly, only recognizable actor, I probably would have hated this movie. It wasn't at all what I was expecting but it held my interest, which, since I tend to have a short attention span at times, is huge. It's not a comedy, per say because I found that I only laughed a few times; it's more of a sci-fi movie, a lighthearted one at that. Matt Damon did a wonderful job and the storyline is incredibly unique. Really interesting movie although I wish it had been a little "more". Definitely worth watching just to see the "strangeness" of it.

Odd little movie, but it kept my interest. Good moral to the movie at the end.

And then of course, when we get to politics, Israelis shrinking Palestinians,
-Ron...
African dictators shrinking rival ethnic groups.
-Ron. Look, Ron. In any major transformation of society, are there serious growing pains?

In the 1950s, the institute identified over-population as mankind's single greatest long-term threat, the cause of all the catastrophes we are seeing today-- extreme climate and weather events, and the devastating impact on food and water security.

No offense, but um... do you think if you're that small you should still have all the same rights as the rest of us normal-sized people? I mean, like the right to vote?
-Why wouldn't we?
Oh, well, jeez, let's see, um... You don't buy as many products, you're not paying as much sales tax, and some of you aren't even paying any income tax. I mean, you're not really participating in our economy, are you?

The world has already seen five major extinctions, and now there will be another. I...I didn't want to believe it. None of us did, but there we were in Helsinki, big and small. Climatologists, bacteriologists, demographers, physicists, immunologists, 26 Nobel Prize winners among us. We built all the models, did all the math, and all conclusion was consistent. Homo Sapiens will soon vanish from the Earth. It is now an actuarial certainty. No matter how the end will come-- environmental disaster, pandemic disease, unbreathable air, impotable water, not enough food, nuclear winter, some combination of them all. Relatively soon the Earth will indeed purge itself of human life, and God knows how many other species.

Friends tell friends the truth. Okay, maybe sometimes I'm a little bit asshole, but the world needs assholes. Otherwise where would shit go out?

Equivalent value. You're solidly inside the Blue Chip zone. In Leisureland your $152,000 translates to $12.5 million-- to live on, for life.

When you know death comes soon, you look around things more close.

Oh, did you hear about all that gas being released in Antarctica? From the ice? The methane?
-Oh, I haven't really been following the news that much lately.
Apparently it's a big deal. Scientists are saying the more the ice melts, the more methane comes out making more ice melt.

I ask myself, Dusan, why the people they want to become small? To help the environment? Please. They become small to have the things which until now were only for the rich, which, by the way, is the genius of the concept.
