A group of old university friends leaves the bright lights of London and travels to Unst, Shetland's most northerly island, to celebrate the marriage of a friend. But late on the night of the wedding party, one of them, Eleanor, disappears - apparently into thin air. Soon her body is discovered, lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge, and Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen the ghost of a local child who drowned in the 1920s. Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there's more to Eleanor's death than they first thought. Is there a secret that lies behind the myth - one so shocking that someone would kill many years later to protect it?

A good Cleeves read set in the Shetlands.

A very well-sustained series of murder mysteries around the appearance of a wee ghostie; also a mystery. I really enjoy Ann Cleeves' writing about the Shetlands and her insightful portrayal of the people. This is no exception and would translate so well to the small screen even if their Jimmy Perez has got red hair!

Maybe not one of the best but still a very good read. Interesting environment and a good picture of social life in the islands.

I sort of liked it, the third I've read in this series, but not as much as the previous ones, which I really liked. I found the plot rather lame with the outcome reason for the murders even sillier. The secondary characters were melancholy, pouty, weak and not very interesting. The interplay between Jimmy and Willow and Sandy was also darkly moody and dysfunctional in this story, definitely not a "team working together oriented group". I would have enjoyed the story a lot more if they communicated with each other in a respectful way. I did like the way Ms Cleeves incorporated the geography of the setting - land and sea and weather - into the story, she did a good job of that in the previous books too.

A police procedural novel with Jimmy Perez the main detective working in Shetland. A group of friends attend a wedding party on the isolated island, the home of the bridegroom. One of them gets murdered. These friends have a complicated relationship, but that doesn't stop Jimmy from tracking down their past. The background of these characters makes for interesting reading. Very small clues are inserted about another odd relationship. The plot is intriguing due to the central figure of a child ghost, also murdered on the island. What was frustrating to me as a reader was the isolation of the island from services like a coroner/pathologist and crime scene personnel who had to be flown in or ferried to the island. Waiting for them to arrive and then waiting for them to give the results of their investigation I was glad that the author could keep my interest with details of the personal lives of her characters. The description of the scenery of the cliffs, the sea, the tides, the crofts also add to the charm of this novel.

I can see why Cleeves killed off Jimmy Perez's girlfriend, Fran. His new boss, Willow, is much more interesting and he has the added complication of Fran's daughter, Cassie. The interactions of the suspects in this book as well as the interactions of the detectives with one another are a bigger part of the story than the solution to finding the killer. Very intriguing ending.

One of my favourite series.
The story is tight and interesting; great characters and I enjoy the Shetland setting thereby learning a little more about the islands and the lifestyle.
I highly recommend all Ann Cleeves books.
Shetland series (BBC ) can sometimes be seen on PBS.

The latest in the Jimmy Perez series is one of the best. So many interesting characters, the wonderful locale, the continuing story of the main characters and, of course, a good juicy mystery all combine for an enjoyable read.

Looking forward to this. Just a note...if you haven't tried Peter May's Lewis books , look for them. Black House is the first but the three are now out as The Lewis Trilogy.
