Graham Cavanaugh's second wife, Audra, is everything his first wife was not. She considers herself privileged to live in the age of the hair towel, talks non-stop through her epidural, labour and delivery, invites the doorman to move in and the eccentric members of their son's Origami Club to Thanksgiving. She is charming and spontaneous and fun but life with her can be exhausting. In the midst of the day-to-day difficulties and delights of marriage and raising a child with Asperger's, his first wife, Elspeth, reenters Graham's life. Former spouses are hard to categorize, are they friends, enemies, old flames, or just people who know you really, really well? Graham starts to wonder: How can anyone love two such different women? Did he make the right choice? Is there a right choice?

A tale of love, marriage, infidelity and origami.

I absolutely loved this book. It had plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud. The author did a wonderful job with the character of Audra. She really leaped off the page and came to life as I read, and she is definitely someone I'd want to hang out and be friends with in real life, even though she had her exasperating moments.

Whenever I picked up this book, I felt as if I were spending time in the company of dear friends. Easy read, wildly entertaining, heartfelt and made me laugh out loud.

Graham has a new wife who is nothing like his old wife. So why does he miss her so much? And was his new wife always so ... exhausting?

This book is a painful reminder of why I don't watch TV sitcoms. And why an abundance of favorable reviews do not necessarily foretell an enjoyable reading experience. I struggled through the first chapter, put it aside to cool off, had a go at the second chapter, couldn't stand it any more, skipped to the beginning of chapters 3, 4 and then 5. At which point I gave up. Were I to have found myself in the unfortunate position of that poor schmuck Graham, married to Audra, I'm afraid I would have murdered her some time back -- or gone stark raving mad. I understand the book is intended to be humorous. I found it as annoying as the proverbial fingernails screeching on a blackboard.
This is the last book I will have read this year and it was by far the worst. By having lemmed it after 5 chapters, I managed to prevent it spoiling my year.

Standard Deviation's likeable protagonist humorously, thoughtfully and humanly examines the complexities of social interaction, commitment and human connection. Well-written and relatable.

This debut novel explores marriage, temptation, origami , and raising a child with Asperger's Syndrome. The characters are quirky and there are lots of laugh out loud moments.

Great book and at times humorous. I think that many individuals can relate to the interesting family dynamics.

Well-written, laugh out loud funny at times, bittersweet. A good beach or vacation read.
