Oh, but this is good storytelling. All too unfortunately often, both "award-winning" and "historical fiction" can mean too dry and earnest to be widely appealing. That's not the case here. The characters are mischievous, down to earth, relatable, and fun. And while the book is first and foremost about the characters--their discovery of themselves and each other--it has plenty of mystery and adventure to create gripping suspense. Wonderful, approachable, and at times folksy language. It's a winner for good reason. Highly enjoyable and one I could recommend to many different readers.
