Bink and Gollie books are perfect for parents getting tired of the Dick-and-Janier early readers. The adventures of two best friends at the state fair couldn’t be weirder—each story zags where it looks like it’s going to zig, packing a lot of punch without a lot of words. Tony Fucile’s art is lively and compliments the funny text; Bink is especially appealing as a rough-and-tumble-looking girl whose lack of frills (or drawn-out eyelashes!) is never commented on.
