Yes, her life was unusual to the point of being difficult to comprehend; that's the point of writing a memoir. We all grow up thinking that what we've experienced is what everyone experiences; it forms our vision of "normal." It takes a writer who can immerse us in her experience of life events, thoughts and feelings to help us understand the world from her point of view. I feel Ms. Westover has done that very effectively. Her ability to bravely and honestly convey the challenges of aligning our original view of the world and how it works with what we later learn through life (and education) leaves me in awe.
